The Visual Miscellaneum

Would you consider pre-ordering my book? That way I can get it into more bookshops. And we can spread the good news about the amazing ALL-GRAPHIC FUTURE OF CIVILISATION THAT AWAITS US!

It’s out in the US 10th November. And in the UK on the 4th February.

Here’s a Visual Miscellaneum US pre-order link

Cover design by DesignWorksGroup

The Visual Miscellaneum by David McCandless: Cover
I received my first copies this week – a joyful and agonising experience. Joyful because yay it’s my book! Agonising because, inevitably, I keep seeing things I want to change or tweak or improve.

Overall though, I think it’s pretty good. Ultimately, I wanted to explore a whole range of subjects as visually and beautifully as possible, with the minimum of text. I hope I managed it and I hope you enjoy it.

Here are some pictures to give you a sense of it.

(Sorry about the awful framing of some of these. I’m a designer, not a photographer yeah?)

Please could you explain a little bit more about what the differences between the book published on 10th November and 4th February are. I’m a little confused by amazon.co.uk:

Hi, just found your blog from WIRED’s GeekDad post on cervical cancer and the HPV vaccine. Great pictures!

Your book looks cool, I might get it for my pa. He has a book called “The Book of Comparisons” which I think would be the conceptual grandparent of yours – facts and figures shown in lots and lots of pictures. I loved it when I was a kid. http://www.maxgadney.com/2009/03/comparisons.html

The Visual Miscellaneum is the US version.

In the UK, the book will be called ‘Information is Beautiful’.

It’s the same book, except the UK version is full hardback and on uncoated (matt) paper. US version is “flexiback” and on coated (shiny) paper.

To avoid confusion, why not buy both versions I say?

    ;)

If you’re in Canada, I’d suggest pre-ordering from amazon.ca — it is available there too: http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/0061748366/harpercollinspub/

Pro tip: if you’re looking at an item on the Amazon US store and want to find out if it’s available in your local version, just change the .com to a .ca, or .fr, etc. and hit enter. Now you’re looking at the same book, but in your store (it’s available on amazon.fr as well, haven’t checked the others.)

I NEED this book! How can I get it in Australia?

  30. Posted October 25, 2009 at 1:17 pm | Permalink | Edit

Is this just a book with inspirational examples or does it actually describe the process of data visualisation?

I bought Data Flow, a similar book, and was disappointed by the lack of any elaboration whatsoever on how the visualisations came to life.

  31. david
    Posted October 25, 2009 at 1:50 pm | Permalink | Edit

@jorisw it’s a bunch of inpsirational examples. But I’ll be documenting the process and other aspects on this website.

You should try what hubspot did with their Inbound Marketing book. They promoted it everywhere and had a contest. People needed to submit how they would promote the book. The people with the best strategies got a free book and in return, helped get the word out and made it viral.

    Posted November 12, 2009 at 12:10 am | Permalink | Edit

David, I bought the book on release day in the US when I wandered into a Barnes & Noble after work & found it up front on the first stand. It’s amazingly designed; even my graphic design student neighbor thinks so. However, I noticed that some of the images are lacking text as to what the shapes & colors stand for. Is this a publishing oversight or a simple “oops” that they just got lost in the moment?

  45. Rachel
    Posted November 12, 2009 at 7:31 pm | Permalink | Edit

I also purchased this book on release day, and agree that it is beautifully designed–congrats on a job well done! The amount of content was more than I expected, which was a very pleasant surprise. However, like Shik I also noticed that some of the images are missing text. Most of the images in Simple Part I have this problem, there are no labels on Salad Dressings saying which dressing the mix is, Daily Diets has no labels on the different colored bars, and Simple Part II also has some missing text. I was on Amazon.com and noticed that the sample page of Simple Part I they posted did have text that was not present in my copy, so I am guessing this is some sort of printing error. While a relatively small number of pages are affected by this problem, it is nevertheless somewhat disappointing. Have you heard anything about these problems and know if HarperCollins is doing anything to solve the problems?

  46. david
    Posted November 12, 2009 at 7:42 pm | Permalink | Edit

@Rachel, @shik Yep, there has been a printing error. A few pages are missing white and overlaid text. I am pretty upset and I’m sorry about this. I’m going to upload the broken pages online over the next week or so. I also have a PDF of the missing pages which I’ll be happy to send you. Scant consolation, I know. Again, apologies.

    Hi David!

We received the book early in the week and absolutely LOVE IT! As a design firm that is pretty geeky about infographics and data, your book totally hits home. Such an inspiration for creatives everywhere.

We wrote up a few beaming words for you. Take a peek.

Hey David! I too got a text-missing copy of the book (I am glad to know it wasn’t just me…).
I’m checking to see if Amazon has any non-misprinted versions of the book but, in the even they don’t, if you could send along that PDF to the e-mail I’ve used in this comment, I would very much appreciate it. :)

    Thank you!

I’m sorry, but you are a hack. I can’t believe some idiot let you publish a book about information design. You obviously know nothing about information design or design in general. What a shame.
